SPIEGEL ONLINE [asks professor
Lewis]: You taught Bill Gates at Harvard
University in the 1970s. What was it about?
Harry R. Lewis: There were two seminars
in 1974 and 1975. One was about combinatorial
mathematics, a course in applied mathematics for
undergraduates. It was about things like
permutation, i.e. number combinatorics, discrete
mathematics, combinatorics and calculations. The
other was an advanced course on an esoteric
field that I can’t even remember because we have
seen such serious changes in these fields.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Three days ago, Bill Gates
received the honorary doctorate with great pomp (link).
What was your impression of him then?
Lewis: I remember a nice story. I got to
know Gates well during that time. I think he was
pretty bored in my courses and said himself that
he got bored in most of the seminars. But he went
to a lot of events and was quite interested.
Sometimes he fell asleep in the seminars.
Afterwards I found out that he might be working on
founding Microsoft until late at night. That, of
course, explained why he was sleepy during the
day. He also liked to play poker in the student
hostel.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Did he still stand out due to
special services?
Lewis: In the combinatorial mathematics
course, I posed a problem that had not yet been
solved exactly. There was only some information.
It was a simple problem, but no one knew the
answer at the time. Gates was missing for a couple
of days then. Instead, he worked on the best known
algorithms and methods of this problem. I then
brought him along with another professor who led
the course with me and also worked on the problem.
The two wrote a contribution. And so Gates came to
house a research article in a respected math
journal. I gave him a puzzle to solve that sparked
his ambition.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: So
Gates was an exceptional student?
Lewis: He was an energetic boy. But
it's always hard to tell if someone was
exceptional. I have taught so many
exceptional students who are now professors
in Yale, at MIT [Massachussets Institute for
Technology] or at Harvard University. And it
was my second year as a teacher there - I
still haven't had the opportunity to
compare. I thought maybe people like him
will come to my office always again and
again. And in a way, they really do. But he
had an unusual combination of intelligence
and ambition. And he was lucky with the
timing. But of course you couldn't predict
what Microsoft would become at the time.
When someone had asked me then whether Gates
could run a successful software company, I
would have said yes. He is ambitious, works
hard and is very fast. Being fast and being
smart is his strength.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Did you notice how he worked
on software programs?
Lewis: Of course he used our
computers. I didn't know then that he was
working on Microsoft. However, I later found
that we had a copy of the 1.1 Microsoft
Basic Interpreter, which is the original
Microsoft product. So we have the documents
about it. I brought it into our archive. The
enlargements of the papers are now hanging
in our faculty building in the foyer - as
inspiration for future generations.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: There
are rumors that Bill Gates did not leave
Harvard entirely voluntarily. Rumors say
that there were reproaches of Harvard
University that he had managed business
affairs on campus.
Lewis: The truth of the matter is that Gates
created a difficult situation for Harvard
that they hadn't anticipated. But no, he
left Harvard absolutely voluntarily, and no
action was ever taken against him. [The

Microsoft with his companion Paul Allen and
did not want to loose time any more at
university - following the advice of the

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But he was working on
university computers?
Lewis: Of course. The professors who
managed the computers made them available to

ordinary and was not against the rules.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you have any further
contact with Bill Gates?
Lewis: Yes, I've met him a few times.
We also spoke briefly to each other at the
graduation ceremony. He is a warm-hearted
